Juniata Track and Cross Country Reunion – April 9-11, 2010 This year’s Reunion event was one of the most pleasant ever, due to the perfect weather and a general aura of Zen permeating the Huntingdon atmosphere. We had 12 attendees, plus several student guests at Saturday dinner: Larry Hoover, Eric Hoover, Jason Hoover, Grant Brewin, Jack McCullough, Connor McCullough, Brian Maurer, Bill Demuth, Cindy Demuth, Bill Kibler, Don Mitchell, and Becky Mitchell. Joining us for dinner were students Caitlin Stormont, Matt Wagner, Sam Williams, and Pete Demuth. Larry, Eric and Grant attended the track meet held at Bucknell University Friday night in which Jason ran a 9:37 3000 meter Steeplechase race, running for the Penn State Track Club (Juniata school record is 9:30). The Demuth’s and Brian met for dinner at Kelley’s Corner, then everyone converged late Friday night in Brian’s room at the HMI for some chatter. (No foot surgery this year). The next morning, it was discovered that the Doc had come down with a stomach virus and couldn’t be more than ten feet from the bathroom, so he declined attending breakfast at Tops with us. Grant continued his annual ritual of steak and eggs followed by picking up the check for the whole group (thanks, Grant!). We welcomed Cindy Demuth to our clan as the Newbie of the year. She fit right in as one of the guys, running and drinking with us, and we all agreed that she is a new asset to our group, as well as rounding out some gender bias. Brian discovered a park next to the Smithfield bridge which told a history of an earlier town, Portstown, now gone, where the park now is. After a stop there, and a photo op at the Standing Stone monument, we headed up town. No track meet this year due to Easter Sunday falling on Juniata’s weekend, so we contented ourselves with perusing the campus. One of Larry’s neighbors, Dr. Worth Stottlemyer, gave millions of dollars worth of artwork to the campus including some Whistler’s, a Rembrandt, and others: The Worth B. Stottlemyer Collection consists of more than 300 paintings, prints, drawings, and portrait miniatures. The collection includes paintings by Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, Jervis McEntee, Thomas and Edward Moran, and Ralph Blakelock. In addition to the larger paintings, the collection includes more than 70 portrait miniatures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Among the prints and drawings are works by Rembrandt, J.M.W. Turner, James Whistler, and selections from Hiroshige's "Fifty-Three Stages of the Tokaido." –Juniata website. Wow. So a tour of the Art museum was in order. Surprisingly (and don’t tell anyone) this valuable collection is almost entirely unguarded. A tour of the old science building greenhouse and bee hives was next. At 3:00, we changed and met at “Pink House” residence for a group run up to the flagpole and Peace Chapel. Almost everyone joined in at various paces. Credos to Connor who kept up with the Big Boys this year. He’ll soon be out stripping his dad. (In the old fashioned sense of the term). Bill, Cindy, and Brian found out the “Loop Trail” is not a loop, and had a little adventure of their own. The weather was perfect for running: sunny and a little cool with warm sunshine when you needed it. We calculated that we covered about 5 or 6 miles total before Matt Wagner treated us to cold lemonade at Pink House (thanks, Wags!). Back at the HMI, we cracked open a couple beers purchased at Strickler’s Beer Distributor (plug), that Bill Demuth bought us (thanks, Bill!). We sat outside at a picnic table soaking in the perfect warm sun and worked on our evening buzz whilst talking and laughing about the day’s events and old tymes. “Chesterfield Ale: good for what ales you”. Bicycle Lee. All Class Night. This was indeed a precious moment combining past, present and future all into one package. After showers (Kibs, you left your shampoo in my room), we zoomed up to the Mitchell Mansion on the Hill and downed a few more while Becky (God bless her soul) and Doc got dinner ready for us. We are all so grateful to the Mitchell’s for sponsoring the main event every year. We recognize how much work it takes and how well prepared it always is. We missed Fernando’s presence and his tasty Mexican dishes this year. The meal was the traditional: spiral cut honey ham, pineapple sauce, potatoes, and an endless assortment of everything else. This year’s feast was the best ever (I say that every year). Caitlin, Pete, Sam, and Matt joined us. Freshman runner Ryan Trexler stopped in for a few minutes, also. A big topic at dinner this year was on environmentalism, but the usual topics also abounded: who ran what times, youthful shenanigans, and on and on. We left at a decent hour for a change (1 AM). The next morning Brian headed back early to Connecticut, Kibs had already gone back to Altoona, and the remainder of the group assembled at Tops again for an outdoor breakfast. Another great time here, and Jack, not to be outdone by Grant, grabbed the check for everyone (thanks, Jack!). We did some group emailing on Becky’s laptop to Mike Slough, who was with us in spirit, but his physical body, owned by Uncle Sam, is traipsing around Iraq on a mission. We expect him back next year (hear that, Mike?). Scott Williams had made plans to attend but had to cancel at the last minute due to work, and we missed his sunny presence and accurate story telling. We really need Scott at these gatherings, as he has the best long-term memory and remembers everyone’s times. Dave Parker promises to attend next year. Hey, and what happened to you ‘80’s guys, Bill, Dana, and George? Thus ended our 13th annual gathering, and began the spring season. A great tradition. Post script: the next day, Jason, Wags, and Connor ended up sick as dogs from the Doc’s stomach virus. -Larry Hoover |

Read Brian Maurer's story on the weekend,
called "The Decent of Man": http://briantmaurer.wordpress.com/2010/04/13/the-descent-of-man/ |

| Marhaba ALL, Greetings from Tikrit, Iraq. I've been working supporting 3rd Infantry Division for the past five months. Just came off a series of missions where we are researching the Iraqi's opinions on the upcoming National Elections. It was very interesting going to several villages and talking with numerous people in the street. We go out with an Infantry Platoon(24) for protection but the Iraqis in the area of operation were pretty cooperative and wanted to dearly tell us their opinions. Of course, some Iraqis took opportunity to ask us questions and file a grievance like repairs for a washed out road or that their town council members are thieves. Several wanted to know when we were going to invade Iran and help the Persians obtain freedom. You see, the Iraqis are starting to get the democratic process which is about time. They are going to vote for the right man or sometimes woman that will do the right thing and not use the position to get rich. In the past, they voted according to party/tribal lines. They are learning. The Iraqis in the street, not the politicians, are really grateful for being rid of Saddam and able to get on with their lives. One guy just graduated from U of Missouri in Electrical Engineering and returned to help his village. Unemployment remains a problem along with 'getting' the idea that we are leaving soon and they need to step up and do the things the US Army did. A tough adjustment for now to stand up and complete a task that helps their community and not themselves even though the tribal ties remain strong in the uneducated regions. The average education level is probably around Sixth grade and seems crazy to turn over the total reins to a bunch of sixth graders. We'll see. It shall be interesting to see what the election results bring. I'll be moving to Baghdad this week and leaving Tikrit. Not looking forward to going to an over-crowded operating base. I won't make it to JC this year. Please have a cold one for me because we can't have any alcohol over here.

Larry, Hope to see you there. Best, Brian Maurer |

Larry,
I
just reserved a room. But the man on the desk said he didn't have
any block of rooms listed. He recognized your name. I went ahead and
just booked a single for the 9th and 10th.
Scott Williams |
| I'll definitely be there. To anyone thinking about not coming: I
strongly urge you to reconsider. You can't find a group of more
friendly, fun, and comical people, teeming with personality (You know,
you ran with them for years!) which is why I make it a point to come out
to every reunion. I hope to see you there. -Eric Hoover '08 |
| As always, thanks for
setting this up, Larry. Bill Kibler |
Hope you have great weather for the reunion. We have had some very cool weather with lows of 27-32 the past couple of weeks and highs of 50 which I'm sure you'll trade right now sight unseen. This past week has signified the end of winter with lows of 45 and highs of 70's. Summers arrived. I do plan on being there next year for sure. After all the chow hall meals, the thought of Becky's ham and pineapple sauce and the whole smorgasbord causes a warm feeling in the pit of my stomach. Katie Dickey and John Wall want to do an email interview with me. I'll put in a plug for our Runners Reunion. All the best to everyone. Mike |

Hey Larry,
Just saw the info for the alumni weekend and checked out the info
and page.
You are noticeably missing any women although they are in the pic.
It seems I received a mailing once but nothing since then.
Please add me to the list and would suggest an alumni notice out to
men and women to be included.
It's too late for me to make the trip this year but wondered what
was happening in Chapel Hill and when?
My best to Don Mitchell!
Thanks,
Mary Yankaskas '82
Hi Mary,When I was in college there were no women running sports, unfortunately. The women in the pictures are either wifes of former JC runners or current JC runners. My two sons just graduated from JC and were track and XC runners, and their friends were running with our group some years. I will put you on our mailing list henceforth, and hopefully you'll join us some year. I'll forward your email to Dr. Mitchell. I'm not sure about your reference to "Chapel Hill". Regards, Larry Thanks so much!
My misread under the alumni events - first listing was for the
reunion and then other cities listed and thought
lots of people form track/x.c. getting together all over!
Hope to make it some time!
Have a great week,
Mary

Announcement:
The format will remain
consistent with former years: home base will be the Huntingdon Motor Inn. We
will meet there about 9:00 or 10:00 Friday night, and try to get into Kelley's
Corner for a couple of beverages before they close down. Then, we may continue
the 'getting reacquainted' meeting in one of the motel rooms (bring musical
instruments if you got 'em). Since Grubbs Diner has gone to another small
town somewhere, we will use Tops Diner as our Saturday morning breakfast place.
There is no home track meet at Juniata this year since our designated
weekend slot falls on Easter. The track teams will be at Bucknell on Friday and
Saturday, so you can hit that up on the way in. If you get to campus by 7:00
PM, the men's volleyball team is playing Princeton, which should be good. For
those of us who are willing and able, we will venture forth for an easy jog
along olde-tyme running trails in the afternoon. No one should feel obligated
to make this run, however, so don't avoid the reunion to skip out on running.
Saturday evening will be the main event which is hosted by Dr./Coach Don
Mitchell and Becky Mitchell at their home, suitably located at the top of
SureKill Hill, actually located on the path of the old XC course! On Sunday,
some of us will meet for a final breakfast at Tops before we head for home.
Also, the Juniata Orchestra is performing Holst's "The Planets" at 3:00 PM
Sunday.
Here's the Juniata
Calendar of events web site:
http://services.juniata.edu/activities/calendar/
For those who are coming from far away via air, you can fly into
Philadelphia airport on Friday, and we of the local Philly contingency can pick
you up and drive you to Huntingdon. Email me if you are considering this
option.
Remember, all JC former runners are welcome, regardless of ability or year
of participation. We also get members of the current track/XC team at some
events.
**Try and make reservations early at the HMI. I reserved four adjoining
non-smoking rooms under the name "Juniata Track/Cross County Reunion", or use my
name to obtain one of these. 814-643-1183. The double rooms last year were
$67.58 per night tax included.
